George "Sassafrass" Winter was the only member of both the 1901 Boston Americans and 1908 Boston Red Sox original teams. In college, at Gettysburg, he teamed with future HOFer Eddie Plank and in the pros he teamed with Cy Young, winning the 1903 pennant clinching game for the Americans. Offered in this lot is a presentable 1902-11 W600 Sporting Life Cabinet featuring Winter in his fancy pinstriped street suit and bow-tie, a telling characteristic consistent with the earliest W600s produced. As noted in the Standard Catalog, "Because these cards were sold individually upon fan request, this is an issue in which the superstars of the day are more common than the benchwarmers." With just 3 total copies on record at both SGC and PSA combined (compared to twice that many Wagners, for example), this George Winter example, graded SGC 40 VG 3, unquestionably falls among that latter group. Moreover, at a cost of just 10-cents back in 1902, or 12 for a buck, that silver dime has paid off at least 10,000 times! Very presentable for the grade with rounded VG/EX corners, some advanced chipping along the reverse side edges, and a mostly unobtrusive circular water mark on the otherwise NM front image.
