The 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates squad lost just 36 games and featured some of the NL's greatest talent, with Fred Clarke playing and managing, Jack Chesbro, Deacon Phillippe, and Jesse Tannehill dominating from the mound with at least 20 wins a piece, and a young superstar they called "The Flying Dutchman" manning the #6 hole. A fun bit of trivia: in the Buc's dominant, pennant-winning season of 1902, even Honus himself took a twirl on the mound, mowing down 5 batters in just over 5 innings pitched. Offered here is a remarkably scarce relic celebrating Pittsburgh's first place finish, a Whitehead & Hoag Type XIII "Pennant Winners" pin that has been deemed PSA GOOD 2, which is relatively irrelevant considering that it's the only example to ever surface at PSA. The front shows a surprisingly well-focused image of the team, with all the above players, while the back shows an 1896-dated patent from the Newark-based manufacturer. Although both the back and the front show advanced soiling (rust, actually), the image is largely unscathed save for what looks like a crack in the enamel beneath the letter "A" in PENNANT. Please go to our website and click the high-resolution image and look two players in from the top right, where you'll encounter an appealing albeit petite depiction of the then 28 year-old Honus Wagner.
