James Edward Canavan played for the Omaha Omahogs/Lambs of the minor league Western Association in 1889 and is checklisted in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards under N173 Old Judge Cabinets. The offered cabinet card displays one of the three images used for his N172 cards, but is not affixed to an Old Judge or Dog's Head mount, leading us to speculate that this is a proof and not a standard N173 redemption cabinet. The card consists of a 3 7/8" x 5 1/2" photo affixed to an anonymous thick, yellow mount that displays period pencil writing on the reverse along with evidence of the mount having been glued into an album at some point. The obverse displays some paper loss at the top and bottom of the edges of the mount which don't seem to affect the actual photograph. The image is well-struck, offering excellent contrast, clarity and depth.
