Pitching in an era when two-man rotations were common, James "Pud" Galvin amassed 6,003 career innings and 646 complete games, both of which are second only to the career totals of Cy Young. In 1888, pitching for the Pittsburgh Alleghenys, he became baseball’s first 300-game winner and posted back to back 46 win seasons in 1883-1884. Offered is an exquisite example of Pud's 1887 Old Judge issue that presents extremely well, even considering its elevated status of 84 NM 7 by SGC. The actual photo of Pud is about as bold as well-contrasted as you'll ever see on an Old Judge card, while the obvious and very common centering bias toward the left side is counterbalanced by strong NM corners and clean surfaces that exhibit virtually no sign of age on their bright white canvasses. One of two graded NM by SGC, only one has graded a half-point higher, and PSA's best effort as only yielded an EX 5. An extraordinarily difficult piece available to the most discerning enthusiasts.
