Sporting goods company Peck and Snyder is credited with printing the first baseball card, using it as an advertisement to help sell their products. It wasn't until decades later that cards were mass-produced for nationwide distribution, led by Old Judge, Goodwin & Co., and Allen & Ginter. About that same time, cabinet cards became popular with many regional issues made through local photo studios. Offered is one of the rarest of all cabinet cards, the J. Wood Studio New York Giants team photo. The studio produced cabinet cards of 14 members of the team as well as this team composite photo, which was also released with baseball caps artificially added to the portraits. Six Hall of Famers appear in the photo: Roger Conner, Buck Ewing, Tim Keefe, Jim O-Rourke, John Ward, and Mickey Welch. It has been removed from its original backing and is skinned on the reverse and the bottom appears to have been trimmed, cutting off or impeding upon the names on the bottom left photos. That said, the number of specimens that have been known to still exist is likely in the single digits.
