T206’s and Hall of Famer Rookie Cards Land Record Shattering Prices in Mile High Card Company’s July Auction

Centennial, CO - If there was any doubt that T206s still rule the hobby, that notion was put to rest with a slew of incredible prices realized in the Mile High Card Company July Auction. “With the outstanding selection of high-grade and rare backed tobacco cards that we were fortunate to offer, we expected some spirited bidding but the result was nothing short of amazing” said MHCC President and CEO Brian Drent.

Over 150 tobacco cards, many of which graded NM or higher with Hall of Famers and two of the three PSA 7 T206s on record with Uzit backs, were available for bidding in what proved to be one of the strongest early 20th Century offerings on record. The PSA 7 NM Uzit-backed cards of Al Birch and Tommy Leach fetched $11,180 and $10,163 respectively with a T206 Piedmont Iron Man McGinnity PSA 8 NM/MT going for $9,817, Piedmont Rube Waddell PSA 8 NM/MT selling for $8,125, Sovereign Eddie Phelps PSA 7 NM hammered at $9,323, Old Mill Tony Thebo PSA 7 NM changed hands at $7,704, Polar Bear Cy Barger PSA 7 NM sold for $6,954 and Sweet Caporal Red Ames PSA 7 NM went for $6,271. The auction was headlined by the only existing E93 Standard Caramel PSA 9 MINT example of Ty Cobb which sold for $82,317, Christy Mathewson which sold for $53,057, and Honus Wagner which sold for $50,530, as well as an incredibly scarce T210 Joe Jackson AUTHENTIC, one of less than ten known to exist, that was claimed for $71,106.

Other outstanding, high-profile items include an amazingly rare 1961 Topps Dice Game Don Drysdale PSA 7 NM that sold for $16,078, a 1933 Sport Kings Babe Ruth PSA 8 NM/MT that reached $23,207 and a 1903 Breisch-Williams E107 Willie Keeler GOOD that netted $14,599. Hall of Fame rookie cards continued their torrid pace with a 1951 Parkhurst Gordie Howe NM/MT+ selling for $21,761, 1981 Topps Joe Montana PSA 10 GEM MINT reaching $12,701, 1985 O-Pee-Chee Mario Lemieux PSA 10 GEM MINT hammered at $11,879, 1965 Topps Joe Namath NM/MT finding a new home for $11,546, 1986 Jerry Rice PSA 10 GEM MINT notching a price of $10,496 and a 1984 Topps John Elway PSA 10 GEM MINT that went for $8,017, all selling at or near record levels. A 1984-85 Star Basketball #101 Michael Jordan Autographed Card UDA and PSA/DNA 10 GEM MINT brought in the astonishing sum of $7,556 and a 1933 Goudey #25 Paul Waner PSA 8 NM/MT sold for $10,665, nearly double the price recorded in last summer’s MHCC auction.
