Offered is a strong PSA MINT 9 example of Mr. Tiger’s striking 1958 Topps issue. In 1953 Kaline bypassed the minor leagues and joined the Detroit club straight out of high school, immediately becoming one of the most successful “bonus babies” during the Bonus Rule years of 1947 to 1965. Just two years later, in 1955, Kaline became (and remains) the youngest player to ever win a batting title, hitting .340 as a 21-year old. The offered collectible ranks among Kaline’s most attractive cards, presenting a clear and well-focused portrait of the then 24 year-old against a deep crimson background. Corners, edges, and centering accurately depict the opinioned grade, and the surface, extremely characteristic of early Topps issues, is distinguished by a small print mark, reminding us, lest we forget, that the offered collectible is a vintage baseball card and not a laser-printed, digitally-enhanced photograph.
