While every advanced collector can probably give you a detailed description of every Mickey Mantle card that Topps and Bowman produced, few would go on to tell you that the '61 Topps card is their favorite. Issued mid-career, the uneventful photo and pedestrian format doesn't stand out against most other Mantle issues, but the significance of the 1961 season and his home run race with teammate Roger Maris makes the '61 Topps card one of the more collectible issues of the Mickey Mantle checklist. The presented specimen appears as though it just came out of a pack and traveled forward in time to this day! Dead-centered with a snow white border and perfectly registered image, this GEM MINT specimen has even managed to sidestep the common stray print pitfalls usually found on the red and yellow nameplates. One look at the four practically flawless corners will explain how GAI came to the conclusion to grade this beauty a 9.5. If there is a fresher-looking example out there, we've yet to see it!
