Featured is one of the more elusive of all T205's with only a mere 9 examples having been designated as such in PSA's Population Report. An exceptionally rare example of the 1911 T205 Gold Border "Cycle 1 Loss" printing variation of Christy Mathewson. The offered variation is a relatively new discovery that has just recently been recognized by The Standard Catalog and grading companies as a checklist addition to the T205 set. The “Cycle 1 Loss” variation is defined by the missing “1” from Mathewson's stats on the card’s reverse; Mathewson's pitching stats are listed as "37-1" for the 1908 season, when in actuality Mathewson was the victim of 11 losses during the season. This back variation appears only on T205 Mathewson cards with a Cycle Cigarettes back. The featured example boasts four moderately worn corners with each of them suffering slight paper loss of the delicate gold that embodies the front of the card. The obverse is affected by several small creases in the interior with a more prominent crease running a 1/4" in from the upper right corner through the angle of the corner. Although the assessed grade of GD 2 by PSA is accurate, the card does present well with deep bold colors as well as a perfectly focused image of the "Christian Gentleman." The reverse, which features the scarce 37-1 record within the HOFer's stats, also presents a clean overall image with a small amount of staining apparent in the upper left area of the card.
