Surpassed by a lone specimen at PSA, the featured 1961 Topps Mickey Mantle issue vaunts an entrancing mix of MINT to GEM MINT qualities for a seemingly conservative grade of PSA 9 MINT. The centering appears perfectly astute from left to right but favors the top border by half the width of a pixel, front and back. The surface corners couldn't be improved if they were cut with the world's sharpest diamond, although the reverse top right apex does appear marginally less pristine than its perfect neighbors. The top and bottom edges are faultless, while the mildly rough-cut side edges add an extra dose of factory freshness to an already like-new specimen. The image itself is every bit as bold and precise as depicted in the scan. By process of elimination, I can only assume this prominent pasteboard missed the GEM mark because of some scattered and completely unobtrusive print, the most prominent of which can be observed in one of the pinstripes beneath Mick's mighty jaw. From our break-up of one of the finest high-grade Mantle collections ever assembled, this remarkable specimen epitomizes the term "high-end."
