Once known as the Warlocks around the San Francisco Bay area, Jerry Garcia and company found themselves in need of a new name after it was brought to their attention that another soon-to-be prominent band which would become the Velvet Underground was already using the Warlocks moniker. After failing to agree on a new name, legend has it, Jerry opened a dictionary at random and placed his finger on an entry in the middle of the page: Grateful Dead. Band members initially disliked the proposed name, but obviously, it stuck, becoming synonymous with 1960s-era counter-culture rock and roll. Offered here is a Warlocks felt bearing the signatures of Jerry Garcia, Bobby Weir, Mickey Hart, Phil Lesh and Bill Kruetzmann, done in red and black fiber tip ink. The piece measures 16" x 20" and is accompanied by an LOA from JSA as well as the band's longtime road manager and president of Grateful Dead Productions, Inc., Laurence "Ramrod" Shurtliff.
