I wonder how long it took the spectators who attended Game 1 of the 1919 Worlds Series to realize that they were viewing what would become the darkest day in baseball history. Though most of the fans at Redland Field went home happy following a Cincinnati Reds 9-1 trouncing of the heavily favored Chicago White Sox, it would soon be discovered that members of the White ... uh, "Black Sox" were allegedly paid off to throw the series. The presented 9 x 7 photo comes from that October 1, 1919 contest, showing Reds third baseman Heinie Groh beating the tag of Chicago's Buck Weaver, who was named in the conspiracy but maintained his innocence after batting .324 in the series without committing an error. Normal wear typical of an almost 100-year old photo is displayed with a slight tear on the upper edge. The reverse has several clippings from when the photo was used in print, along with the original teletype.
