For collectors of unopened material, especially those with a preference for football cards, the 1984 Topps series ranks as one of the most revered. First off, you have the rookie cards of John Elway, Dan Marino and Eric Dickerson, each of which demand a premium due to the surprisingly low percentage of GEM MINT examples. That's especially true of the Elway RC, which often experiences centering that is slightly amiss or stray print on the surface. What should be a relatively routine card to land in a GEM MINT holder has proven to be anything but, reporting less than 0.8% of all submissions achieving the top mark. While the Marino (1.6%) and Dickerson (2.2%) rookie cards fare better, they still pale in comparison to the entire set (10.6%). It stands to reason that any new GEM MINT examples of these important rookie cards would have to come out of unopened material, like this incredible 1984 Topps football unopened wax case. It's hard to believe but 20 unopened boxes of 36 wax packs await the winner, which offers the potential to come away with multiple prime examples of Marino, Elway and Dickerson's coveted rookie cards. Along with the Walter Payton card, which will also take you into four digit range for GEM MINT specimens, there's a pretty strong core of top prizes to be had for the daring collector, should they decide to have at it. But again, it's a great case to snap up and put away for the future as well. We've all seen the astronomical rise of 1986 Fleer basketball material. Could this be next?
