The 1933 Goudey card of Lou Gehrig is such an iconic and timeless example that even people outside of the baseball card world immediately recognize it, often more so than issues of Babe Ruth or Mickey Mantle. While Ruth gets most of the accolades as being head and shoulders above any other player of his time, his closest competitor sat a mere few feet away on the bench, and it's a lot closer than you'd think. In the 10 seasons that they appeared together full time in the Yankees lineup, Ruth hit 424 homers to Gehrig's 347, but Gehrig drove in more runs (1,437 to 1,325) with a slightly higher batting average (.343 to Ruth's .338). But being the bigger draw, Ruth scores a quartet of appearances in the 1933 Goudey set to Gehrig's two, and this PSA 8 graded card #92 is simply marvelous! The bold powder blue backdrop surrounding the image of Gehrig stepping into his lefty swing is evenly bold and accurately centered, framed by a bright white border with NM/MT corners between NM/MT+ edges. The registration in the area of Lou's facial features deserves special consideration, extremely well-detailed in delivering how deeply concentrated Gehrig is on the incoming pitch. The reverse is centered with a noticeably bold print impression, exhibiting the typical red coloring at the bottom from the nameplate on the front. Own your piece of the "Iron Horse" with a strong bid on this perennial favorite and industry icon, long considered one of the most significant sports cards in the hobby.
