Known as "Honest Abe", the 16th President of the United States of America presided over four of the bloodiest years in American history. Taking office one month prior to the start of the Civil War, Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theater by actor and Confederate spy John Wilkes Booth just five days after General Robert E. Lee's surrender. Predicting in his Gettysburg Address that "the world will little note, nor long remember what we say here", Lincoln was greatly mistaken as the speech has served as one of the greatest orations in American history, promising that "the government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth." The featured piece is a magnificent look back into those tumultuous times, depicting a weathered President Lincoln with his hallmark beard in a sharp black and white with a written text of the Gettysburgh address alongside and a nameplate identifying the President with the dates of his Presidential tenure. Below the photo is quite simply the most impressive signature of Lincoln that we've ever seen, penned "Respectfully submitted to the Treasury Department", signed "A. Lincoln" and dated Nov. 8, 1861. The signature is as bold and clean as we've ever seen, earning a perfect GEM MINT 10 assessment from Steve Grad/Beckett authentication. For autograph collectors or history buffs, especially those that focus in on past Presidents and other great historical figures, this is an amazing piece of history that was signed at a time when the future of the United States as a country was in doubt. Measures approximately 23" x 24" framed. LOA from Beckett Authentication.
