The 1996-97 Topps Chrome basketball release was one of the greatest issues of the decade. This was the initial Topps Chrome set and it was basically a chrome version of the 1996-97 Topps base set. Hobby dealers did not show much interest in the product, so it was released via retail outlets only. Eventually collectors realized the tremendous nature of the set, and prices for unopened boxes skyrocketed. Obviously the key to the set is the rookie card of Kobe Bryant, who tragically passed away in a helicopter accident on January 26, 2020. Other key rookies from that spectacular draft class include Steve Nash, Allen Iverson, Ray Allen, Stephon Marbury, Jermaine O'Neal, Derek Fisher, and Marcus Camby. The box contains 20 packs with 4 cards per pack, with refractors inserted at a ratio of 1:12. Other inserts are Season's Best 1:6, ProFiles 1:8, and YouthQuake 1:12.
