Maybe it's just a coincidence that the Upper Deck company happened to dive into the baseball card market at the exact time that Ken Griffey Jr., the most celebrated up-and-coming talent in a generation, was making his way onto the big-league diamond. Then again, maybe they took a page from Topps, who introduced their baseball card product just in time for Mickey Mantle and their basketball line (twice) to introduce Bill Russell in 1957 and Lew Alcindor in 1969, all icons in the sports card world. And then here comes Upper Deck with its thick card stock, wonderful photography, and a card #1 that featured a 19-year old sensation who now ranks seventh all-time with 630 round-trippers. Presented is a complete unopened low number case containing 20 boxes of 36 packs each, giving ample opportunity to land many GEM MINT Griffey rookie cards if one were inclined to do go speculating, but also the potential for Randy Johnson and John Smoltz rookie cards on top of the usual cavalcade of superstars. Or just store it away and let it age like fine wine. The choice belongs to the winning bidder.
