Graded MINT 9 by PSA. Up for auction is a spectacular pasteboard from the 1971 Topps issue, infamous for its susceptible black borders, featuring the immortal Roberto Clemente and bearing the alluring grade of MINT 9 as determined by PSA. This example provides the enthusiast with a bewitching image of the iconic superstar, struck with precise focus and registration. The perimeter is solidly grade-appropriate, with just a slight touch to the upper left corner and largely unchipped edges. While all Clemente cards are revered by the collecting public, this issue is of particular interest, as Roberto led the Pirates to the World Championship in 1971, earning World Series MVP distinction with a .414 batting average and the famous game-winning home run in the seventh game. As one of only 16 in the grade out of 2154 submissions, this one falls in the top .074% of graded examples with just a single copy somehow graded higher. The offered card is without a doubt the finest 1971 Topps Clemente that I have ever encountered and that most definitely includes the PSA 10 example.
