Offered is an enticing group of early 70’s Topps Football collectors sets. Including in this massive group are complete sets from both 1970 and 1971 as well as a near complete set from 1972. The 1970 set contains 263 cards with notable RC issues of O.J. Simpson, Jan Stenerud, Elvin Bethea, Alan Page, Lem Barney, Bubba Smith, Tom Mack, and Fred Dryer, as well as the expected line-up of HOFers and stars: Griese, Starr, Sayers, Tarkenton, Namath, Csonka, Unitas, Butkus, and others. Cards range from VG to EX/MT, due mostly to even corner and edge wear. The 1971 set is also complete at 263 cards and also grades VG to EX/MT. With their patriotic red and blue borders, however, the 1971 Topps Football issues are as notoriously condition sensitive as their black-bordered baseball brethren, but the winning bidder will be happy to discover several examples that exceed the overall opined grading spectrum. In addition to many of the aforementioned stars and HOFers, the ’71 set presents the first cards of Steeler greats, Terry Bradshaw and Mean Joe Greene, as well as RC issues of Ken Houston and Willie Lanier. What makes the ’71 set so enjoyable, however, is the year-by-year player statistics listed for the first time on the reverses. The 1972 set, finally, is complete except for the difficult third series, cards 264-351, and grades VG/EX to NM. This set is loaded with RC issues from the likes of John Riggins, Archie Manning, Jim Plunkett, Ted Hendricks, L.C. Greenwood, Ron Yary, Lyle Alzado, Gene Upshaw, Larry Little, Charlie Joyner, and, of course, Roger Staubach. In short, this is a supreme offering for the gridiron enthusiast who prefers to be comprehensive in his collecting rather than overly condition-conscious. Polish up on your gridiron trivia with these classic sets and enjoy the occasional encounter with a sharp card begging for a trip to PSA. Trust me; they’re in there!
