By the time that the 1960 baseball season had rolled around, Yankees star center fielder Mickey Mantle had won three home run titles, two A. L. MVP awards, produced a Triple Crown season, and with 280 career round-trippers at just 27 years old, there was talk of "The Commerce Comet" challenging the Babe at the top of the all-time home run list. So when the innovative 1960 Topps set was released, not even the rookie cards of Hall of Famers Willie McCovey and Carl Yastrzemski could knock Mantle off of his perch. Almost 6,000 1960 Topps Mickey Mantle cards submitted to PSA have yet to produce a single GEM MINT specimen, and just 29 of them, less than one half of 1%, have reached the status of this MINT beauty. You can't help but notice the plethora of brilliant color projected from the surface, amplified by a heavy layer of gloss that picks up the light and reflects it brightly. The precision of Mantle's image is absolutely perfect and the centering is extremely accurate for the issue. The corners are unmistakably MINT with two of them pushing GEM MINT limits. What's unusual for this card, even compared to others at this grade level, is that the red background of the player cut-out is free of the print defects that so commonly blemish this susceptible area. This is a phenomenal specimen that belongs in a world-class collection!
