While it doesn't take a vintage baseball card collector to recognize names like Cobb, Ruth and Mantle, less notable diamond-dwellers like Joe Page, Gene Baker and Pancho Herrera are names only familiar to the avid hobbyist, and not because of their on-field prowess. Advanced collectors who have moved beyond basic sets and have accepted the challenge of taking on a master collection will be interested in this piece, one of the finest specimens of an elusive variation; the 1958 Topps Pancho "Herrer" card. Due to a partial blockage of the Cuban-born first baseman's name during the printing process, a small number of his pasteboards were released into circulation with the final letter omitted, creating an error card similar to the Willard Sherman card from the previous year's Topps football set. Between PSA and SGC combined, only 39 total specimens have been submitted for grading, and just one other resides at the SGC 88 NM/MT 8 level with none higher. Now the assessment might say NM/MT but we'd challenge anyone to place this card side by side with any 1958 Topps MINT card and clearly outline what the differences are. Incredible deep powder-blue, red and yellow colors grace the canvas with a snow-white frame that spotlights near perfect centering while the corners and surfaces are unquestionably above grade. This is a golden opportunity for any world-class master set builder to finally acquire this incredible specimen in a grade befitting of their top-ranked assemblage.
