It's certainly not too far fetched to believe that the 1957 Topps basketball collection is to the hardwood what the 1952 Topps baseball set is to the diamond. The first mainstream collection distributed since Bowman's attempt in 1948 produced a set that is mostly rookie cards, 19 of which feature players that went on to become Hall of Famers. Of course, the grand prize of the set is the Bill Russell rookie card, considered by many to be the most important card ever produced of the sport. And while the coveted 1952 baseball high-numbers are known for having centering issues, it pales in comparison to the framing issues of the entire 1957 basketball series. The featured unopened five cent wax pack is graded GAI 7.5 and is absolutely fantastic, perfectly sealed across the reverse with the taut wax covering retaining all of its original color. Topps learned their lesson when they overproduced the 1952 Topps baseball series, sending cases of unwanted product to a watery grave. They were much more cost conscious when they rolled out their inaugural basketball series and packs such as the one featured here are far more scarce. If you're a collector of unopened material, this beauty will be one of the rarest gems!
