Hall of Famer Hank Aaron won the first of his two National League batting titles in his third season, but with just 66 home runs over that span, "Hammerin' Hank" was not a serious threat to Babe Ruth's all-time home run title. In fact, he was considered to be underachieving in the power department. But that ended in year four when Aaron won the National League home run (44) and RBI (132) titles, ironically coming up short of Triple Crown immortality in the category for which he was the defending champion, his .322 average good for 4th place. But leading his team to a World Series championship that year earned him his only NL MVP award, squeaking out the honor in a close vote with Stan Musial. Even with Ernie Banks and Al Kaline making their debut with Topps, Hank Aaron stands as the premier card in the 1954 Topps collection. The offered example has been graded PSA 7 with "Hammerin' Hank's" image laid out in exquisite detail against a vivacious pumpkin-orange background, framed by smooth, white borders that show a bias toward the bottom edge that is barely noticeable. Taking that into consideration, the card appears as sharp as most at the NM/MT level and, in our opinion, is worthy of an extra half-point. If a NM level Aaron rookie card is "in the cards" for you, this is about as pleasing a specimen as we've encountered.
