A regional issue in the New York Metropolitan area, cards from the 1954 Journal American set were only available with a purchase of a copy of the now defunct newspaper and included members of the New York Yankees, Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants. The Yankees were ... well, the Yankees, and the Dodgers and Giants were usually the two teams left standing to battle for the National League pennant in order to get the chance to lose to the Yankees in the World Series. The key to the set is, of course, Mickey Mantle, but there are plenty of stars and Hall of Famers to make it one of the most popular regional issues ever made. The featured set is #1 on the PSA Set Registry with a set rating of 8.068 and needs just one card (Clem Labine) for completion. There are 11 "one of one" cards with none grade higher, led by an Ed Lopat PSA 9, as well as 25 others that top out at the highest grade ever recorded. The Mickey Mantle card is graded a respectable PSA 8 (only 2 have graded higher) and over 60% of the collection is graded PSA 8 or above.
