Absent from the 1954 Topps set, avid collectors and Yankees die-hards had to turn to alternate sources to satisfy their craving for a pasteboard of New York icon Mickey Mantle. Several companies were up to the task, one of which was the Journal American. Given away with the purchase of a copy of the now defunct newspaper, the Journal American cards included members of the New York Yankees, Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants. This example is features sharp corners and clean surfaces indicative of a lofty PSA 8 grade, one of 12 at this level with just one graded a half-point higher.
