Considered to be among the most popular non-sport issues ever produced, the always difficult card #1 from the 1940 Superman series is presented in the grade of PSA 7. Ever since the character of Superman was introduced in the June 1938 edition #1 of Action Comics, he has been the enduring figure to which all other superheroes have been compared as well as an inspirational figure for our fighting forces during World War II, standing for "truth, justice, and the American way." Moreover, the Gum Inc. issue of the Superman trading card series has proven to be one of the most condition-sensitive non-sports sets of all-time, reporting no GEM MINT examples and just six MINT specimens out of well over 6,000 submissions. And as you might expect, card #1 like the one offered here is even tougher in high grade, reporting just five others at the NM level with one NM/MT on record out of over 130 submissions. Plenty of bold red and blue colors accentuate "The Man of Steel" while the NM/MT corners help to counterbalance the slight centering shift toward the right horizontal edge. A very attractive piece that should get the attention of PSA Set Registry listed set-builders.
