A successful follow up to the 1933 series, the 1934 Goudey collection was considerably downsized from 239 cards to just 96, which makes it a far more attainable goal for vintage set-builders. Even with its greatly diminished size the '34 Goudey set still offers some noteworthy issues with final cards of several stars and Hall of Famers released during their playing days, Lou Gehrig (featured twice) and Dizzy Dean foremost among them, as nationally distributed baseball cards would all but vanish from American culture for the remainder of the decade. While the 39-year old Babe Ruth is noticeably absent from the series, a mysterious development since he was featured so prominently on a quartet of cards the previous year and still "had the goods" with a 34-homer, .301 performance in 1933, the set does include the rookie card of Hank Greenberg as well as one of the most coveted cards of the entire decade, #1 Jimmie Foxx, and 14 additional Hall of Famers. The lineup was not as strong as its predecessor but the vastly improved printing technology of the '34 collection is evident in its superior image quality and the addition of the "Lou Gehrig (or Chuck Klein) Says" banners as well as the subtle silhouettes added to the backdrop make it more aesthetically pleasing in the eyes of many. This collection is complete and rates 30% EX/MT or better, 20% EX, 10% VG/EX, 25% VG and 15% lower with nine key PSA graded cards: #1 Foxx PSA 2.5, 7 Durocher PSA 4, 11 P. Waner PSA 4.5, 21 Terry PSA 6, 23 Gehringer PSA 6, 35 Lombardi PSA 5.5, 37 Gehrig PSA 5.5, 61 Gehrig PSA 4.5 and 62 Greenberg PSA 6. Other key cards are #2 Cochrane GOOD, 6 Dean VG, 12 Hubbell VG+, 19 Grove VG+, 27 Appling EX+ and 90 Cuyler FAIR.
