While the 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth card with the yellow backdrop is credited as being the most elusive of the quartet to find in mid to upper-grade, in actuality the "red Ruth" is not far behind. So for advanced Goudey collectors, when a superior specimen of card #149 comes along, you have to make a serious effort to obtain it for your collection. The featured example of Ruth is so bright and well-contrasted in its presentation that at a quick glance, you might think that it's at the NM//MT level. Of course, further examination shows a mild preference for the bottom edge and slight touches at the bottom corners that make the technical grade accurate if not slightly conservative. The real highlight of this high-end keepsake is the freshness of both the front and back surfaces, with the deep red pigment and image of Ruth appearing spot-on and the bright white canvas and green print on the reverse easily surpassing just about any at this grade level. Entering his 20th major league season at the age of 38, Ruth appeared timeless as his 41 homer, .341 performance in 1932 might not have put him head and shoulders above the rest of the league but still placed him 6th for American League MVP honors. Particularly sharp for the grade and a wise acquisition for any elite collector in need of this iconic pasteboard!
