Crafted with the precision and attention to detail of a world-renowned surgeon, this near century-old pasteboard featuring "The Bambino" has achieved a grade of PSA 8, an assessment matched by just one other with none graded higher. Though the near-perfectly cut perimeter with its straight, smooth edges, accurate centering and squared endpoints that easily surpass the grade is indeed impressive, what's even more astonishing is that the printed illustration of Ruth has retained its incredible sharpness and unbelievably vibrant color. The deep red pigment of Ruth's sleeves strongly contrasting with the glowing, sun-soaked yellow background that resists the opportunity to exhibit unwanted stray print is a welcome aberration, extremely uncommon for surviving W514 specimens, even in this elevated grade. Likely preceding the 1920 season when he was dealt to the New York Yankees, the card depicts Ruth in his Red Sox uniform though he is listed as a member of the Yankees, quite possible the first card that lists Ruth on his new team, with "Home Run King" in reference to his second consecutive title in 1919. In July of 1921, that title took on new meaning when Ruth hit his 139th career round-tripper and passed Roger Conner to become the all-time home run leader, wearing the crown for over 50 years. A finer example simply does not exist!
