When Chicago-based printer Felix Mendelsohn offered his baseball card set to various businesses, one of the more obscure takers was the Globe Clothing Store of St.Louis. Given an American Card Catalog designation H801-9, the Globe-backed issue is far more scarce than the parallel M101-4 and M101-5 issues, confirmed by PSA with less than 100 total specimens from the entire 200-card series having passed through their California headquarters. While the featured card may not be quite as appealing as the T206 specimen that bears his likeness, this 1916 Globe card of Honus Wagner is one of only 2 ever graded by PSA and one of the highest graded specimens of all Globe cards ever graded. Wagner was an aged 42-year old part-time player on the brink of retirement when this card was issued, but his 8 National League batting titles had already assured him a place in the baseball history. While the real-life black and white images and glossy surfaces depicted on Mendolsohn's creation make it one of the most appealing issues of the dead-ball era, this particular card conveys a nearly flawless snapshot of "The Flying Dutchman" that is deeper than most, expertly centered on the canvas with strong NM corners and a clean Globe advertising reverse. Listed as several times more valuable than the more common Sporting News issue, here's an opportunity to pick up a true rarity the likes of which may not be seen again for a long time.
