Sports journalist Jimmy Cannon once said of Ty Cobb, "He was the strangest of all our national sports idols. But not even his disagreeable character could destroy the image of his greatness as a ballplayer. Ty Cobb was the best. That seemed to be all he wanted." There's never been a wider dichotomy in sports than the beauty of Ty Cobb the athlete and the ugliness of Ty Cobb the man, but "The Georgia Peach" will always hold his legendary status as a true baseball immortal. Although virtually every card ever produced during his career stands as one of the most coveted items for vintage collectors, there's a mysticism about his 1914 Cracker Jack issue that stands above all others. The presented card is graded SGC 45 VG+ 3.5, with a left side centering variance and staining from the candy that is expected for the series. But what this card offers that goes beyond the modest grade is an uncommon strength from the clean, red backdrop and lightly rounded but ably sturdy endpoints. A faint wrinkle is visible at the lower left corner but it really plays no role in the overall aesthetics of the card. A strong representative given the grade, this offers a great opportuniy to collectors not able to secure a truly elite-level specimen.
