Presented is an absolutely stunning silk pillow top issued in 1912 and designated in the Standard Catalog as S110. Closely related to the S81 silks, it is believed that these premiums were issued by the American Tobacco Company with redemption of 100 coupons, far more than were required for any other premium. This particular example is by far the nicest we've ever encountered here at Mile High, with a supremely fresh appearance highlighted by strong, vivid colors against an ivory white backdrop that is embossed with an entrancing floral pattern. Four Hall of Famers grace the surface of this remarkably scarce relic, juxtaposed against a diamond that boasts a vibrant shade of green and immediately captivates the viewer. Red cross-stitch patterns bordering each player image would indicate that the individual silks were meant to be sewn on as they were acquired, but this phenomenal sheet remains uncompromised by needle and thread. All four edges reveal only the slightest evidence of fraying, and the only apparent trace of toning is in the form of a small water stain, less than 2" in diameter and visible primarily from the reverse, a very minor blemish just to the right of Christy Mathewson's right calf that does not detract from the overall visual appeal in any significant way. The images of Cobb, Speaker, Baker and O'Toole, which are the same images utilized in the T3 Turkey Red issue, are absolutely pristine, projecting forth with tremendous color, contrast and detail. The images of the bats near the center top and period catcher's gear at the bottom are equally impressive, lending an even greater level of nostalgia and desirability to the item. Simply stated, this is far and away the nicest, most well-preserved example of this scarce premium issue that we have ever encountered, and is deserving of a home in the most advanced of world-class collections.
