Though it's not as well-publicized as the variation cards in the T206 series, the T205 card of Christy Mathewson with the rare "one loss" variation on the reverse is every bit as difficult and features a bonafide legend. Just 20 are listed on the PSA pop report and this one comes in high up the scale with only 6 others listed at a higher grading tier. The front surface is surprisingly appealing for the grade with the clean depiction of Mathewson positioned slightly to the right of dead-center while the usual rounding and chipping are present and commensurate with the grade. However, the reverse displays fantastically bold print, far better than other specimens that rank at this grade level and even higher. If you were under the impression that the 37-1 listed in his 1908 statistics was the result of a weak strike, one look will put that theory to rest. Overall, this is a truly extraordinary example of a very difficult card that finally completes your prized T205 collection.
