When the T206 series debuted in 1909, Ty Cobb had just won back to back American League batting crowns, though his .350 average in 1907 had dropped to a mortal .324 mark the next season. But "The Georgia Peach" was just getting started, posting a ridiculous .386 combined batting average from 1909-1919 while taking 10 more batting crowns over those 11 seasons. The only season he was beaten, 1916, he finished with a .371 average, second to Tris Speaker's .386 mark. It's no wonder that the T206 series features four different issues of Cobb, none more wonderfully appealing than his "bat off shoulder" variety. The featured card is a true artistic marvel, an SGC 88 NM/MT gem that rates as one of the finest, if not the finest, examples ever evaluated by SGC. While the presentation of the NM/MT endpoints and ample centering, positioned slightly to the right of center but well within grading specifications, is certainly impressive enough for any advanced collector, the delivery of the central image is what's truly mesmerizing. The brilliance of the pristine white borders complement the clean confluence of blue, white, brown, tan, pink, purple and green pigmentation supporting the expectedly sullen image of Cobb, decked out in a dark uniform and black striped hat with his war stick showing such great detail that you can see how the grain of the wood is portrayed. This is a top-notch specimen for even the most advanced of tobacco card collectors, and certainly one of the most attractive that you'll ever encounter!
