The current high bid for the complete set, $142,939.00, is greater than the aggregate total of the bids on the single cards that comprise this set, $101,716.00 (this lot is currently losing)
Once you get past "the big four" (Wagner, Plank, Magie variation and Doyle variation) in the T206 series, which most collectors really don't count as necessary for a complete set, the toughest variation card required for completion becomes the St. Louis example of Ray Demmitt's card, which carries the Polar Bear reverse. Traded in December of 1909 from the New York Highlanders (the future New York Yankees), only Polar Bear backed cards reflect the team change while the other ad backs continued to show Demmitt as playing for New York. In addition to the scarcity of the card, the fact that it was included in Polar Bear tobacco, a scrap tobacco brand as opposed to rolled cigarettes, makes it an even more condition-sensitive issue. Presented is a fine PSA 4 example that shows moderate wear commensurate with the grade and typical staining from said scrap tobacco. If you're still on the hunt for this elusive example for your collection, you can put that quest to rest with an aggressive bid here!
