Though the PSA flip reads "Bat Ready/45 Degrees" this card is actually the Strike-Ball Chest High-Detroits card from the 1887 N172 Old Judge series. Almost the same pose, but dedicated Old Judge collectors will recognize the difference. Hall of Fame inductee Sam Thompson was one of the most prolific run producers of his era and finished his career with a .331 batting average. Arguably amongst the first five-tool players, he became the first to record 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in the same season in 1889 and was also known for having one of the strongest throwing arms in the league. In fact, he still ranks among all-time league leaders with 61 double plays from the outfield (16th all time) and 283 outfield assists (12th all time). The presented card has been deemed altered by PSA and did not receive a numerical grade, but has a solid EX-MT to NM appearance with a very strong and highly contrasted image, which to many Old Judge collectors is more important than a numerical grade.
