One of the first true superstars in baseball history, John Montgomery "Monte" Ward was known as a player that could do it all! Over his 17-year career, he rapped out over 2,100 hits, but his best offensive weapon was his speed. Stolen bases were not recorded over the first 8 seasons of his career, but he is credited with 540 swipes over his final 9 seasons, including a league-leading 111 in 1887. He was just as magnificent on the mound, posting a 146-103 record with a lifetime 2.10 ERA and a league-leading 47 wins in 1879. The featured pasteboard is newly graded, fresh from the discerning critics at PSA headquarters and flaunts the highest grade ever given for the issue and the only specimen that stands at the level of PSA 6. Superb centering and uncanny photographic quality are just the tip of the iceberg for this unique prize as the edges and endpoints seem to have defied time to retain a solid rectangular shape to which few Old Judge cards can compare. A simply spectacular find that any advanced collector looking for the very best will appreciate!
